Type theory of personality classifies people into distinct personality categories or types based on common traits and behaviors. Rather than viewing personality as a set of continuous traits, type theory places individuals into fixed personality types.
One of the earliest examples is Hippocrates’ four temperaments sanguine, choleric, melancholic, and phlegmatic based on bodily fluids. Another well-known model is Carl Jung’s classification of individual
as introverts or extroverts, which later influenced the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).
Type A and Type B personalities are another modern classification. Type A individuals are competitive and time-urgent, while Type B individuals are relaxed and easy-going.
While type theories help simplify and understand general personality patterns, they are often criticized for being too rigid and not accounting for individual differences as effectively as trait theories do.
