• The Vertical Interval (V.I.) is the difference in height or elevation between two successive contour lines on a map.
• It is always measured in metres or feet and remains constant throughout a given map.
• The V.I. helps in understanding the steepness of the slope when contour lines are close together, it indicates a steep slope, and when they are widely spaced, it indicates a gentle slope.
• The value of the vertical interval is chosen based on the scale and nature of the land being mapped.
• If the vertical interval (V.I.) for a contour map is 100 meters, then the contours will be drawn at heights of 0, 100, 200, 300 meters, etc.
