Obedience behaviour refers to following the direct commands or instructions of an authority figure. Unlike conformity, which involves peer influence, obedience is about complying with orders from someone in a position of power.
Psychologist Stanley Milgram’s famous experiments showed that people can obey authority even when asked to perform actions conflicting with their personal morals, such as delivering (fake) electric shocks to others.
Obedience is essential for social order and discipline but can also lead to harmful outcomes when authority is misused.
