Arikamedu, located in Pondicherry, was a coastal settlement that existed around 2200 to 1900 years ago. It was a place where ships from far-off countries came to unload their goods.

Archaeologists found a large brick structure at the site, which is believed to be a warehouse. They also discovered pottery that came from the Mediterranean region. For example, amphorae were tall jars with two handles used to carry liquids. Another type of pottery found is called Arretine Ware, which is a shiny red stamped pottery named after the city of Arretium in Italy.
