The detachment of plant organs such as leaves, flowers and fruits is known as abscission. Natural auxins in plants inhibit the creation of an abscission layer, which would otherwise result in the abscission of leaves, flowers, and other organs. Leaves drop seasonally as they stop generating auxin.
