Urbanization in India and Brazil highlights two separate paths of demographic change and regional development in the Global South. Brazil experienced a rapid, early wave of urbanisation in the mid-twentieth century, resulting in a highly urbanized country with more than 85% of the people living in cities. Rapid urbanisation, particularly in southeastern megacities like São Paulo, resulted in housing shortages and the emergence of favelas. In contrast, India is experiencing a gradual, ongoing urban transformation, with just roughly 35% of the population currently residing in urban areas.

However, due to its large population, India has an enormous number of city dwellers, which is fuelling the rapid rise of megacities such as Delhi and Mumbai, as well as emerging secondary cities. While Brazil's primary issue is to upgrade and manage existing, high-density metropolitan infrastructure, India has the colossal task of building new, sustainable infrastructure to support its massive, unavoidable rural-to-urban migration.
