उत्तर
The United Nations (UN) is a global organisation entrusted with ensuring international peace and security while also encouraging good relations between nations. It is the world's largest, most well-known, and most powerful intergovernmental organisation.
Following the devastation of World War II, the United Nations was established with the goal of averting future world conflicts. It was intended to be a replacement for the ineffectual League of Nations. On April 25, 1945, officials from 50 countries convened in San Francisco to draught the United Nations Charter. The Charter was signed on June 25, 1945, and took effect on October 24, 1945.
The UN is structured around five principal organs:
- General Assembly
- United Nations Security Council (UNSC)
- Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)
- International Court of Justice
- UN Secretariat.
The Trusteeship Council, the UN's sixth principal organ, ceased operations on November 1, 1994, when Palau, the last surviving UN trustee territory, gained independence.
