Attachment behaviour refers to the emotional bond that develops between an infant and their primary caregiver, usually the mother. This bond is essential for the child’s survival, emotional development, and future relationships. Psychologists like John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth have significantly contributed to understanding how attachment forms and its impact on later life.

Attachment begins to develop in infancy. According to Bowlby’s attachment theory, babies are biologically programmed to form attachments as a means of survival. In the early weeks, infants show no preference for any caregiver, but by around 6 to 8 months, they begin to show a strong preference for their primary caregiver, displaying separation anxiety and stranger fear, signs that a strong attachment has formed.

Mary Ainsworth’s “Strange Situation” study identified three main types of attachment:

  1. Secure attachment, where the child feels safe and trusts their caregiver.
  2. Insecure-avoidant attachment, where the child avoids closeness due to unresponsive care.
  3. Insecure-resistant attachment, where the child is anxious and unsure due to inconsistent caregiving.

These attachment styles are shaped by the caregiver’s responsiveness and sensitivity to the child’s needs.

Research suggests that early attachment influences social and emotional development, self-esteem, and future relationships. Children with secure attachment are generally more confident, empathetic, and successful in forming stable relationships. In contrast, insecure attachments can lead to problems like anxiety, trust issues, and poor emotional regulation.

While attachment theory is widely supported, critics argue it may overemphasize the role of the mother and overlook other caregivers like fathers or grandparents. It may also underestimate the child’s resilience and ability to form new bonds if early attachments are poor. Cultural differences in parenting styles also challenge the universal application of attachment classifications.
