1. There was unfathomable devastation and suffering; millions of people died and numerous others were injured. Huge areas were reduced to rubble. Both the military and civilian population were in appalling conditions.
2. The Allies Powers eventually overcame the Axis Powers, despite their early incredible success.
3. After being overrun by the Allies, Germany was split into four zones, each ruled by the United States, Britain, France, and Russia. Later, the zones ruled by France, the United States, and Britain were integrated to form West Germany. East Germany was the name of the Russian-occupied region.
4. The world was virtually split into two power blocs shortly after the Cold War began: the Democratic or Capitalistic bloc led by America and the Communist bloc led by Russia. Thus, uneasy peace began with the outbreak of the Cold War.
5. Russia and America became the world's superpowers as a result of the Second World War, devaluing France and England in the process.
