उत्तर
Chipko Movement:
The Chipko Movement was a non-violent environmental movement that aimed to prevent deforestation in the Garhwal Himalayas. The term “Chipko” literally means “to stick” or “to embrace.” In this movement, people, particularly women, would hug the trees, holding onto them to prevent loggers from cutting them down. The movement was first organized in 1973 in the Uttarakhand region (then part of Uttar Pradesh) to protect the forest resources from commercial exploitation.
Reason for its Success:
- The active participation of local communities, particularly women, played a crucial role.
- The movement gained widespread attention when hundreds of people, including women and children, physically embraced the trees to prevent them from being felled.
- The protesters were so determined that they told the loggers, “If you want to cut the trees, you must kill us first.”
- The peaceful resistance and the solidarity of the community eventually forced the loggers to withdraw, making the Chipko Movement a success.
