उत्तर
Nitric acid (HNO3) is a volatile acid and a strong oxidizing agent. It decomposes and oxidizes the hydrogen gas liberated at the cathode back into water, interfering with the electrolysis process. Therefore, non-volatile dilute sulphuric acid (H2SO4) is preferred.
