• The Concept of Self-Government: The Early Nationalists aimed for Constitutional Reforms and a greater share in the administration under the overarching supervision of the British Crown (similar to the self-governing colonies of Canada or Australia). Conversely, the Assertive Nationalists demanded Swaraj, which meant complete independence from British control and full political autonomy for Indians.
• Faith in British Justice: The Early Nationalists believed that British rule was generally beneficial and that British statesmen were fair-minded, so they limited their demands to institutional updates.
