The Prime Minister of India occupies the most powerful and central position in the Indian political system. Though the President is the nominal head of the State, the Prime Minister is the real executive authority and the head of the Union Government.
- Leader of the Majority Party: The Prime Minister is the leader of the political party or coalition that commands a majority in the Lok Sabha.
- Head of the Council of Ministers: He selects other ministers, allocates their portfolios, reshuffles them when necessary, and can even demand their resignation. All ministers hold office at his Majesty’s pleasure.
- Presides over Cabinet Meetings: He chairs all cabinet meetings, decides the agenda, and ensures collective responsibility of the ministers.
- Chief Policy-Maker and Administrator: He formulates and implements both domestic and foreign policies. He manages the internal and external affairs of the country effectively.
- Chief Spokesperson of the Government: He represents the government’s stand in Parliament, to the media, and on international platforms.
- Link Between President and Cabinet: As per Article 78 of the Constitution, he is the main channel of communication between the President and the Council of Ministers. He advises the President on major appointments like Governors, Election Commissioners, Ambassadors, etc.
- Leader of the Lok Sabha: He leads the business of the House, answers questions on behalf of the government, and plays a crucial role in the legislative process.
- Crisis Manager: In times of national emergency or crisis, the Prime Minister plays a decisive role in decision-making and national coordination.
