The alluvial soil in the eastern coastal plains is generally light grey to brownish-grey.

These are recent river deposits (khadar) made mostly of fine silt and clay laid down by the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri river systems, so the soil is fine‑textured and porous with relatively low, variable humus content; the colour therefore tends to be light. Shades vary with depth, texture, maturity and organic/mineral content older or more clay‑rich pockets can be darker.
