Sponge iron, also called direct reduced iron (DRI), is produced by directly reducing iron ore using carbon or reducing gases to give a porous, low-carbon solid whose surface has many holes; Containing about sixty to seventy percent iron, it serves as feedstock for mini steel plants and electric furnaces, enabling lower capital cost and cleaner production than blast-furnace pig iron; India ranks among the largest producers in the world.
