उत्तर

Radiation pollution, called radioactive or nuclear pollution, is the presence of ionizing radiation or radioactive materials in the environment at levels above the natural background, caused by natural or human activities. It can contaminate air, water, and soil and enter the food chain.

Common sources include natural cosmic and terrestrial radiation, and man‑made sources such as nuclear power operations and waste, nuclear weapons testing and accidents (e.g., Chernobyl), medical and industrial uses of radioisotopes, and mining/processing of radioactive ores.

Health and environmental effects range from acute radiation sickness at high doses to increased long‑term risks of cancer and genetic/chromosomal damage; some radioactive wastes remain hazardous for many decades to centuries.
