Retting is a controlled microbiological process used in fiber manufacturing in which harvested stalks of crops such as jute or hemp are submerged in water to dissolve the natural plant gums and pectin that hold the tissues together. This softening process makes it easy to remove and separate the tough, high-quality textile fibers from the woody inner stem by hand.
