In general, the memory management modules performs following functions:
- To keep track of all memory addresses that are either free or allocated, as well as which processes are allocated and how much.
- To determine the memory allocation policy, i.e., which process should receive how much memory when and where.
- To allocate and deallocate memory addresses using various techniques and algorithms. Normally, this is accomplished with the help of some special gear.
