उत्तर

The chief requirements for orographic (relief) rainfall to be experienced are:

  1. Presence of a mountain barrier or highland: Moisture-laden winds must be forced to ascend along the slopes of a mountain or hill.
  2. Moisture-laden winds: Winds carrying sufficient moisture (usually from nearby seas or oceans) are necessary to bring humid air towards the mountain.
  3. Rising and cooling of air: As the moist winds rise up the mountain, the air expands and cools adiabatically (due to a decrease in pressure with altitude).
  4. Condensation and precipitation: The cooling causes the moisture in the air to condense, forming clouds and eventually precipitation (rainfall) on the windward side of the mountain.
  5. Rain shadow effect: After crossing the summit, the now dry air descends the leeward side, warms up, and results in little or no rainfall, creating a rain-shadow region.

A classic example is the Western Ghats in India, where moisture-laden monsoon winds cause heavy rainfall on the windward western slopes, while the leeward side remains dry.
