A seam is a distinct, continuous layer or bed of a mineral (usually coal) that is embedded horizontally within layers of sedimentary rock underground. It is formed over millions of years by the enormous accumulation and compaction of ancient plant materials, and its thickness determines how helpful it is to mine.
