उत्तर

British rule had some effects that later benefited India, but overall it was designed mainly to serve British interests.

  1. Arguments in favour:
    1. The British introduced railways, roads, postal services and telegraph systems.
    2. They helped develop a more uniform system of administration and law.
    3. Modern schools, colleges and the use of the English language expanded during British rule.
    4. New political and social ideas such as liberty, equality and representative government became more widely discussed.
  2. Arguments against:
    1. The British mainly used India’s resources for Britain's benefit.
    2. Heavy land revenue and colonial policies created serious difficulties for peasants and farmers.
    3. Indian handicrafts and traditional industries suffered because of competition from British manufactured goods.
    4. India mainly exported raw materials and imported manufactured goods, which weakened local industries.
    5. Poverty, unemployment and famines remained serious problems under colonial rule.
    6. Indians had very little control over important political and economic decisions.

Therefore, although some institutions created during British rule later became useful, it would be wrong to say the British Raj was mainly good for India. Its basic purpose was to strengthen British political and economic control, not to develop India for Indians’ benefit.
