The Rajya Sabha has a maximum number of 250 members, which are divided into two categories: nominated and elected.
- Nominated Members: The President selects 12 members with specialised expertise or practical experience in areas such as literature, science, art, and social service.
- Elected Members: The remaining 238 members are elected delegates from the states and the two Union Territories of Delhi and Puducherry. Seats are apportioned based on population, resulting in an unequal distribution between states and union territories.
