5. Early life: Born in Gary, Indiana, on August 29, 1958. He was the 8^th of ten children in his working-class African American family.

7. Early success: In 1964, Michael and his brother Marlon joined the Jackson brothers, a band formed by their father and won a major local talent show. They would go on to become the world-famous Jackson 5, catapulting Michael to fame.
8. Contribution to the field and world: The concept of music videos as short films is one of his greatest accomplishments. He effectively broke the racial barrier, which proved a boon to several other African-American artists who followed him.
