The first example is when the crofter let the peddler stay with them. The rattrap peddler was surprised that the crofter was friendly because he was used to being told to leave. The peddler was also shocked when the ironmaster invited him out of the blue. The ironmaster was also shocked the next day to realise he had mistakenly thought the peddler was someone else. Another reaction that neither the peddler nor the ironmaster expected was Edla’s attempt to get the peddler to come to Christmas. However, the peddler’s reaction when he leaves the package and letter for Edla, as a way of thanking her for her kindness and respect, is the most surprising.
