Write a composition (in approximately 400-450 words) on the following subject.

The children’s library in your locality was in a neglected condition. You and your friends visited it recently and decided to do something about it. What did you see there and how did you bring about a significant change? Describe the excitement on the reopening of the library and how you felt when many children began to visit it eventually.

There they were, a mess: stacks of old books, some without covers and some with pages that were torn. A stack of wise old people lay with their guts showing. It was both sad and exciting. Fun because there was a chance to bring the treasure boxes back to life.

We found these secret gems while on a school trip. Our history department planned a trip to see historical sites. One of the places was an old house that had been left empty. We could feel the atmosphere as we got closer, even though it was in a bad way. There were big doors that went to long hallways and then to large halls. The windows with stained glass told of its lost greatness. There were old pieces of furniture and grand awnings all over the place.

As we moved along, a squeaky door opened to show rows of old bookshelves. There was a musty smell and a lot of dust and spiders on the walls. The first thing that came to mind was getting out of the dark hall. After that, my love of books made me want to look into it more. I was thrilled to find that I knew the big books of old history, geography, and philosophy. It was a waste to leave them there for worms and ants to eat! I convinced my teachers and friends to come back the next day and do what they could to save what they could. My passion caught on, and soon there were a lot of book lovers coming together to help.

A group was made, and each person was given a certain number of shelves to work on. The library was cleaned up and cobwebs were taken down with the help of people we hired. It took a week, but after that it looked like a ghost of its former glory. With help from the archaeological department, the building was fixed up and opened again as a public library. Students can use it to do research, and people in the area can use it in their free time to find secret gems of knowledge.

It was a very rewarding event. The City Council put together a program to thank us for our service on the first day the library opened, which made us understand how important our work was. The mayor gave my school and me an award for finding out what the treasure house could be used for and saving it from ruin.
