Cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai have large slum populations. These settlements, although informal, provide cheap labour to the city and contribute significantly to its economy, especially in sectors like construction, domestic work, street vending, and small-scale industries. Despite their poor living conditions, slums are closely linked to the functioning of urban areas and reflect the imbalance between urban growth and infrastructure development.
