Shyam attended winter trekking camps in both Nainital and in Ooty. He observed that the mountains in Nainital were ice-covered, whereas in Ooty they were ice-free.

  1. As a student of Geography, explain the reason for the difference in the climate of Nainital and Ooty?
  2. If Shyam goes to Kochi in the same season, what difference of climate will he experience?

उत्तर

  1. While both places are at high altitudes, which normally contributes to cooler temperatures, the discrepancy comes from two fundamental geographical differences Shyam observed:
    1. Latitude and Sunlight Angle: Nainital is located in North India at a higher latitude (about 90N), away from the equator. In the winter, it receives slanting sun rays, which are less powerful and produce less heat. Ooty is located in South India at a lower latitude (about 11N) near the equator. It receives more direct sunlight even in the winter, keeping temperatures relatively mild and preventing the creation of permanent ice.
    2. Distance from the Equator: Ooty is in the tropical zone, while Nainital is in the subtropical/temperate zone. Nainital’s higher latitudinal position causes temperatures to drop below freezing point more easily in the winter, resulting in snow and ice cover.
  2. Kochi is a low‑lying coastal city with a tropical maritime climate. In the same season, he would experience much warmer and more humid conditions than in Nainital or Ooty, no ice, higher night minima, smaller daily temperature range, and a pronounced sea‑breeze influence. Coastal locations also show less extreme winter cooling than inland/mountainous northern sites.
