• The Reason behind King Dilipas Childlessness: According to Mahakavi Kalidasa’s Raghuvamsha, King Dilipa could not attain the happiness of having a child due to an unintentional insult to the divine cow, Kamadhenu. Long ago, King Dilipa went to heaven to assist Devraj Indra in a battle. While returning to Earth, he passed by the desire-fulfilling cow, Kamadhenu, who was resting under the shade of the Kalpavriksha tree near Indra's palace. Immersed in deep thoughts of meeting his queen Sudakshina, the king failed to notice Kamadhenu and passed by without bowing or paying his respects. Feeling slighted, Kamadhenu grew furious and cursed the king: “You shall not be blessed with a child until you serve and win the favor of my progeny.” Due to the loud rattling sound of his chariot's wheels, neither King Dilipa nor his charioteer heard the curse.
• The Remedy Prescribed by Sage Vashistha: When King Dilipa expressed his grief at the hermitage, Sage Vashistha revealed this forgotten incident using his divine vision. He explained that Kamadhenu was currently in the underworld (Patala) attending a grand sacrifice for Lord Varuna, making it impossible to serve her directly. However, Vashistha offered a solution by pointing to Nandini, the daughter of Kamadhenu, who resided in his own ashram. The sage advised King Dilipa and Queen Sudakshina to surrender themselves to the selfless service of Nandini. He instructed them to follow her like a shadow, tend to her every need, and consume only her milk after she was fully satisfied. By dutifully fulfilling this penance (Gau-Seva), the curse would be lifted, enabling them to beget a noble lineage.

• राजा दिलीप की संतानहीनता का मुख्य कारण: महाकवि कालिदास कृत ‘रघुवंशम्‌’ महाकाव्य के अनुसार, राजा दिलीप को संतान सुख न मिलने का एकमात्र कारण दिव्य गौ माता कामधेनु का श्राप था। एक बार राजा दिलीप देवराज इंद्र की सहायता करने के लिए स्वर्ग लोक गए थे। युद्ध के बाद जब वे पृथ्वी पर लौट रहे थे, तब मार्ग में कल्पवृक्ष की छाया में समस्त कामनाओं को पूर्ण करने वाली कामधेनु गाय बैठी थीं। राजा दिलीप अपनी पत्नी रानी सुदक्षिणा से मिलने की उत्कंठा और विचारों में इतने खोए हुए थे कि उनका ध्यान कामधेनु की ओर नहीं गया और वे उन्हें प्रणाम किए बिना ही आगे बढ़ गए। इसे अपना अपमान समझकर कामधेनु ने अत्यंत क्रोधित होकर श्राप दे दिया: “जब तक तुम मेरी संतान की सेवा करके उसे संतुष्ट नहीं करोगे, तब तक तुम्हें पुत्र रत्न की प्राप्ति नहीं होगी।” रथ के पहियों की तेज गड़गड़ाहट के कारण न तो राजा दिलीप और न ही उनके सारथी ने उस श्राप को सुना था।
• महात्मा वशिष्ठ द्वारा बताया गया निवारण: जब राजा दिलीप ने व्याकुल होकर महर्षि वशिष्ठ से अपनी व्यथा कही, तो गुरुदेव ने ध्यान लगाकर इस गुप्त कारण को अपनी दिव्य दृष्टि से देख लिया। उन्होंने राजा को बताया कि कामधेनु इस समय वरुण देव के यज्ञ में सम्मिलित होने के लिए पाताल लोक गई हैं, इसलिए उनकी साक्षात् सेवा संभव नहीं है। इसके समाधान स्वरूप महर्षि ने अपने आश्रम में रह रही कामधेनु की पुत्री ‘नंदिनी’ नाम की गाय को राजा को सौंपा। वशिष्ठ जी ने राजा दिलीप और रानी सुदक्षिणा को निर्देश दिया कि वे दोनों तन-मन से नंदिनी की सेवा करें। राजा को नंदिनी के पीछे उसकी परछाई बनकर चलना था, उसके रुकने पर रुकना था और उसके संतुष्ट होने पर ही उसके दूध का सेवन करना था। महर्षि ने विश्वास दिलाया कि इस कठिन गो-सेवा से प्रसन्न होकर नंदिनी उनका श्राप मुक्त कर देगी और उन्हें कुलदीपक पुत्र की प्राप्ति होगी।
