Paddy farming is an important agricultural technique in India since it provides the bulk of the country’s rice, which is a staple food crop. It is primarily a Kharif crop that thrives in a hot and humid climate, requiring high temperatures above 25° C, high humidity, and plenty of water, often from yearly rainfall above 100 cm. As depicted in the illustration, the cultivation method is extremely labour-intensive and has traditionally involved manual transplanting, in which young rice seedlings grown in nurseries are painstakingly planted by hand into flooded fields or terraces.
