The poem tells the story of Count de Lorge and his beloved during the reign of King Francis. One day, the king and his courtiers were watching a fierce fight between lions. To test De Lorge's love and bravery, his beloved dropped her glove into the lions' pit. De Lorge bravely jumped into the pit, picked up the glove, and returned safely. Instead of giving the glove back with love, he threw it at her face and walked away. He was angry because she had risked his life only to satisfy her pride and gain attention.
