When a bus arrived, we squeezed in, sharing a torn newspaper to block the wind. A girl beside me nearly dropped her geometry copy. I steadied it, and she thanked me with a shy smile that brightened the cold. Near my stop, an old man offered to hold his umbrella so I could keep my notes dry; under that small shelter, we walked slowly and talked about the storm. By the time I reached home, my shoes squelched, but my spirits were oddly light. What began as an inconvenience had turned into a string of small kindnesses and a lesson that a sudden storm can reveal the best in people, much like the short classroom passages you study.
