They may be awarded for microorganism strains, cell lines, genetically modified plants and animals, DNA sequences and their encoded proteins, biotechnological procedures, production processes, products derived from biological entities, and applications of those products. A genuine invention may be patented; merely discovering something that already exists is not the same as inventing it.
