उत्तर
Hormones secreted by anterior pituitary:
- Somatotropic Hormone (STH) / Somatotropin / Growth Hormone (GH): The secretion of GH is high till puberty later its secretion becomes low. However, it is continuously secreted throughout life for repair and replacement of body tissue or cells.
Functions:- It stimulates the growth of the body and the development of all tissues.
- It accelerates protein synthesis and cell division.
- It stimulates the release of growth hormone.
- Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) / Thyrotropin:
Function:
It stimulates the thyroid gland to produce the hormone thyroxine. - Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) / Adrenocorticotropin:
Functions:- It stimulates the adrenal cortex to produce its hormones.
- It maintains the functioning of the adrenal cortex.
- Prolactin / Luteotropin/ Mammotropin:
The secretion of this hormone is regulated by PIF (Prolactin inhibiting factor) of the hypothalamus.
Functions:- Activates the growth of mammary glands during pregnancy (mammotropin).
- Stimulates milk production and secretion of milk (lactogenic) by the mammary gland after childbirth.
- Gonadotropins:
- Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH): In males, it stimulates the development of seminiferous tubules. In females, it stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles.
- Luteinizing hormone (LH): LH induces the ruptured follicles to develop into corpus luteum and for the production of progesterone FSH and LH are responsible for the stimulation of ovaries to produce estrogen.
- ICSH: In males, it stimulates the testes to produce the androgen called testosterone. Testosterone is responsible for the development of secondary sexual characters

Which of the following conditions is not linked to deficiency of thyroid hormones?
You have learnt that a characteristic feature of endocrine system is the presence of feed back loops. By this what is meant if hormone A stimulates gland ‘X’ to secrete hormone B, the production of ‘A’ could be modified when the level of B changes in our blood. An example is the relation between hormones LH and estrogen (E2). An old woman exhibits the following features. High levels of LH in blood but low levels of E2 in the blood. Another woman exhibits high level of LH in blood and also high level of E2 in the blood. Where is the defect in both these women? Provide suitable diagram to support this answer.
