The main duties of the Indian Hockey Federation are:

1. Its primary duty is to plan, develop, and run national team programmes while maintaining close coordination with the Sports Authority of India.
2. Another key responsibility is to train and prepare players at the sub-junior, junior, and senior levels.
3. The governing body also appoints national coaches through internationally recognized certification programmes. It educates coaches and officials on modern equipment and technical officiating and provides international-level umpiring training. In addition, the Indian Hockey Federation works to bring major international hockey tournaments to India, such as FIH events and the Men’s World Cup in 2010. Hockey India also aims to place both the men’s and women’s national teams among the top three teams in the world.
