उत्तर
Management as a Science: Science refers to a systematic body of knowledge that focuses on a particular field of study and contains general principles explaining specific phenomena. It establishes a cause-and-effect relationship between factors and identifies the underlying principles. These principles are developed through scientific methods such as observation, study, and testing, and are considered universal truths applicable everywhere. Science is defined by four features:
- A systematic body of knowledge
- Use of scientific methods of observation
- Principles based on experiments
- Universal validity of principles
Management possesses these features: It has a structured body of knowledge, relies on observation and experience, and its principles are developed through research and practical experience. These principles can be applied in various situations, which makes management a science. However, management is a social science, a relatively new and evolving field where principles are flexible rather than rigid laws.
Management as an Art: Art refers to the ability to achieve desired outcomes by applying knowledge and skills. Management is considered a creative art because it involves applying extensive knowledge and using innovative, initiating, implementing, and integrating skills in relation to goals, resources, techniques, and outcomes. Management as an art includes abilities like judgement, intuition, and practical experience.
Management is an art because:
- It requires know-how and skills.
- It focuses on achieving specific, concrete results.
- Like any other art form, management is creative, allowing for innovation and improvement.
- Management is personal and subjective; there is no universal “best management”. Every manager brings their unique style, approach, and methods to solve problems. The success of management depends on the personality, character, and expertise of the individuals involved.
Therefore, management is both a science and an art; it combines systematic knowledge and principles with practical skills and personal judgement to achieve goals effectively.
