The hot deserts are not good for vegetation due to climatic conditions. The rainfall is too scanty to support a vegetable cover. Therefore a lot of bare ground on desert land.
- The type of vegetation growing here consists of thorny scrubs like cactus, prickly pear, and other plants which are adapted to survive in a region of low rainfall. These are called Xerophytic plants.
- Some species have thick leathery leaves, some are leafless while some plants have a repugnant smell so that they are not eaten by animals.
- Cacti are the most typical plants in the deserts. The Saguaro Cactus in the Arizona Desert (USA) is the famous cactus.
- The date palm grows best only in hot deserts as it requires plenty of sunshine and sandy soil. Date palms are grown near the oases where under groundwater occurs near the surface.
