Good morning to one and all. Today, I stand before you to speak on a harsh reality of our times: “Sports are meant for the rich only.”

Gone are the days when sports were just about passion and a ball in an open field. Today, modern sports have become very expensive. To excel at a professional level, an athlete needs high-end equipment, specialized kits, and expensive memberships to private clubs. For a middle-class or poor family, buying a professional cricket kit or a high-quality tennis racket can cost a month’s salary.

In the current scenario, money is the main player. Professional coaching fees are sky-high, and nutritious diets required for athletes are an added financial burden. Unfortunately, talented players from humble backgrounds often stay hidden because the poor have neither the money for fees nor the high-level recommendations needed to break into elite academies.

However, we must change this. To ensure talent isn’t lost, I have a few suggestions:

• The government should provide free world-class coaching in rural areas.
• Corporate companies should sponsor talented athletes through CSR programs.
• Schools should provide free kits and equipment to students who show promise.
