1. Northern rivers are largely perennial with a gentle gradient across the plains, so they have continuous deep flow and fewer obstructions, making them navigable year-round.

2. The flat alluvial plains of North India allow easy canal construction and provide wide, silt‑free riverbeds (no rapids, waterfalls or cataracts), whereas peninsular rivers are seasonal, swift and broken by falls/cataracts, so inland water transport is less feasible in the Peninsular region.
