People conform to social behavior because they want to fit in, be accepted, and avoid conflict or rejection. Social norms act as rules for how to behave in different situations. When individuals follow these norms, they feel like part of the group. They may also believe that if many people are doing something, it must be the correct way to act. This is especially true in unfamiliar situations, where people look to others for guidance.
On the other hand, people digress from social behavior or break social norms when they want to express individuality, challenge unfair rules, or when they disagree with what others are doing. Some may feel that following the group goes against their personal values or beliefs. Others may feel confident enough to resist peer pressure or they may act differently to stand out, gain attention, or bring about change.
