Mizoram became a full state in 1987. This was after the region had been granted Union Territory status in 1972, following an agreement with the moderates within the Mizo National Front (MNF), which had earlier led an independence movement under the leadership of Laldenga. Full statehood for Mizoram was granted after years of negotiation and the resolution of the Mizo insurgency.
