In 1989, communism quickly collapsed in East Germany (GDR). Germany was reunited as a result of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Here are four significant occasions:

1. Opening of Hungary-Austria border (August 1989): Hungary’s border with Austria was opened in August 1989 when the walls were taken down (Pan-European Picnic). This allowed East Germans to flee to the West through Hungary. Thousands ran away. This shows that East Germany was no longer able to govern its citizens. It set off a domino effect.
2. Mass protests in Leipzig and other cities (September-October 1989): “Monday Demonstrations” began in a Leipzig church. People called for an end to communist rule, freedom, and the right to travel. The number of protests reached lakhs. "We are the people" (Wir sind das Volk) became a slogan. The government was unable to put an end to it peacefully.

However, official Léter Schabowski misrepresented the rules’ “immediately” application on television. Thousands rushed to Wall. The gates were opened by guards. Parts of the Wall were broken by people. This put an end to division, and communism quickly lost power.
