In an agriculture field the ratio of salary of skilled and unskilled workers is 5 : 4. Total salary of one day of both of them is ₹ 900. Find daily wages of skilled and unskilled workers.

Let the daily wages of skilled workers be ₹ x and that of unskilled workers be ₹ y. 

From the first condition,

`x/y = 5/4`

∴ 4x = 5y

∴ 4x – 5y = 0   ...(1)

From the second condition,

x + y = 900   ...(2)

Multiplying equation (2) by 5,

5x + 5y = 4500   ...(3)

Adding equations (1) and (3),

4x – 5y =       0   ...(1)
5x + 5y = 4500   ...(3)
9x         = 4500

∴ `x = 4500/9`

∴ x = 500

Substituting x = 500 in equation (2),

x + y = 900

∴ 500 + y = 900

∴ y = 900 – 500

∴ y = 400

The daily wages of skilled workers is ₹ 500 and that of unskilled workers is ₹ 400.
