उत्तर

Nuclear waste is first sorted by activity and heat (low‑, intermediate, and high‑level or spent fuel) and treated according to that classification; low‑activity items are placed in engineered near‑surface trenches or vaults while higher‑activity solids are immobilized and kept in more robust engineered storage. Spent fuel and other high‑level waste are held initially in cooling/storage facilities until their heat and radioactivity fall, then are conditioned (sealed in containers or immobilized) for long‑term isolation. Modern practice favours permanent emplacement deep underground in engineered concrete vaults or geological formations with multiple barriers to prevent contact with groundwater and the biosphere. Historically, some wastes were dumped at sea, but that is no longer acceptable, and current approaches emphasise containment, monitoring, and long‑term safety assessment to protect people and the environment.
