Freons are usually prepared by halogen exchange reactions, where chlorine atoms in a hydrocarbon (like carbon tetrachloride) are partially replaced by fluorine atoms using hydrogen fluoride (HF) in the presence of a catalyst such as antimony pentachloride (SbCl5).
