The altitude of the Sun varies with the seasons because when the Sun is overhead the Tropic of Cancer, the northern hemisphere enjoys summer while the southern hemisphere experiences winter. When the Sun passes overhead the Tropic of Capricorn, the northern hemisphere experiences winter and the southern hemisphere enjoys summer.
