A region can be classified as developed or developing on the basis of landuse.

Land use refers to the uses humans make of the land available to them. The interaction between geographical factors and human needs results in different patterns of land use. A country's economic development plays an important role in determining these patterns. Developed countries have higher agricultural productivity and stronger manufacturing and service sectors than developing countries. Because of this, developed countries generally have a smaller proportion of land under agriculture and more land used for secondary and tertiary activities. Thus, land use is an essential indicator for classifying a region as developed or developing.
