उत्तर

Following are the limitations or shortcomings of the law of Equi-Marginal utility are:

  1. Irrational Behaviour of the Consumer: The law assumes that consumers make rational decisions to maximize satisfaction. However, in reality, consumer behaviour is often influenced by habits, trends, advertisements, and psychological factors, leading to less rational choices.
  2. Utility is Subjective: Measuring utility is challenging because it is a psychological experience, unlike physical quantities like heat or energy. Each individual perceives satisfaction differently, making precise measurement difficult.
  3. Marginal Utility of Money is not Constant: The law relies on the assumption that the marginal utility of money remains constant, but this is rarely true. The purchasing power of money can vary over time due to changing economic conditions and inflation.
  4. Unrealistic Assumptions: The law is based on rigid assumptions, such as constant tastes, preferences, and homogeneous products. However, these factors are continually evolving in the real world, making the law less applicable.
  5. Ignorance of the Consumer: Consumers often lack complete information about all available goods and their prices, limiting their ability to make optimal choices as assumed in the law.
  6. Consumer is not Computer: Unlike computers, humans do not continuously calculate marginal utilities to make purchasing decisions. This limits the practical application of the law, as real-world decision-making is often intuitive and imprecise.
  7. Indivisible Goods: Some goods, like cars or televisions, cannot be easily divided into smaller units, making it difficult to apply the law in such cases, as partial consumption is not possible without losing utility.
  8. Durable Goods: Measuring the utility derived from durable items like cars or machinery is challenging. Unlike consumable goods, these items provide utility over a long period, making direct comparison of their marginal utility with that of other goods less meaningful.
  9. Scarcity of Goods: In times of commodity shortages, consumers often have to settle for available substitutes, making it difficult to precisely measure the marginal utility of these scarce goods as their value can fluctuate significantly.
  10. Laziness of the Consumers: Some consumers do not actively seek to maximize their utility due to habit, indifference, or laziness, making the law less applicable in such cases where rational decision-making is lacking.
