Give a geographical reason to explain the following:

It is difficult to grow rice in red soil without the help of irrigation.

Rice is a water‑loving crop that needs abundant and constant moisture (often standing water) during most of its growing period; however, red soil is light, porous and deficient in humus and essential nutrients, so it cannot retain moisture. Therefore, without artificial irrigation to supply and hold the required water, rice cannot be grown successfully on red soils.
