Focusing on employment and Gross Value Added (GVA) is critical because it indicates the fundamental balance between a sector’s economic output and its ability to support human livelihoods. GVA calculates the actual monetary wealth that industry injects into the economy by subtracting the value of its production from intermediate inputs, revealing which industries fuel national growth. Meanwhile, employment numbers reflect how many people rely on that sector for income, allowing policymakers to assess labour productivity and highlight structural flaws, for example, a primary sector that employs a large proportion of the population but creates a disproportionately small part of GVA. However, focusing simply on these two indicators ignores important human and environmental factors of development. A comprehensive examination must consider employment quality, such as job security, fair wages, and informal labour conditions, as well as the sector’s environmental impact, resource depletion, and carbon emissions. Furthermore, concerns such as rapid automation threatening future job development, geographical imbalances between urban and rural areas, and the strength of a sector’s supply chain ties with other industries must be assessed to ensure long-term economic growth that is both equitable and sustainable.
