Dr. James Naismith, a physical educator at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, wanted a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied and maintain their fitness. After rejecting several ideas, he used a soccer ball and two wooden peach baskets fixed high at opposite ends of the gym. Players tried to throw the ball into the baskets.
